# How to Read Your Birth Chart: A Beginner's Guide Your birth chart (or natal chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact time and place you were born. It shows a lot more than your Sun sign. Read as a whole, it maps your personality, your emotional patterns, and the things you're here to work on. ## 1. The big three * **Your Sun sign (who you are at the core)**: your sense of self, your drive, what you value, and the energy you give off. * **Your Moon sign (how you feel)**: your gut reactions, what you need to feel safe, and what comforts you in private. * **Your Rising sign, or Ascendant (how you come across)**: the sign coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born.
